Guest blog: Save and Fundraise - Tom Gill

Updated: Apr 4

At Fair Collective we're always eager to hear about people, organisations and initiatives that help small charities and the people who work with them. So, when Tom Gill got in touch to let us know about his new initiative Save and Fundraise we were excited to share it with you - read more below and drop Tom an email if you'd like to find out more.

Save and Fundraise is a new fundraising tool that not only helps charities big and small raise significant funds, but excitingly it also helps their staff, volunteers and supporters with the current cost of living crisis by helping them save £100’s on their bills at home.

Hi, I’m Tom Gill and having worked in the International Development sector for over 15 years I’ve spent 2022 developing an exciting and new free fundraising tool that not only helps charities big and small raise significant funds, but excitingly it also helps their staff, volunteers and supporters with the current cost of living crisis by helping them save £100’s on their home bills.

My charity journey started whilst at University, where I was part of the duo that started an international development charity with the aims of providing vocational training for former street children, safe play spaces in refugee camps, educational play programs and psycho-social support. After over a decade of growing what was then called East African Playgrounds into a medium-sized charity I escaped the perils of ‘founders syndrome’ and handed over the reins. Since then I have worked in a range of charities as interim COO, CEO and pro bono consultant to Small International Development Network (SIDCN) members. So much has changed in the sector during the last 15 years, but the one thing that persists is that the fundraising world is only getting harder and harder for us all. With more charities and projects competing for ever-shrinking pots of funding, small charities need to work hard than ever to raise the funds they need.

Having developed new fundraising projects and income streams throughout my career (some more successful than others) I have always wanted to develop a way that small charities can raise considerable funds without the risk of investing both funds and time. The dream has always been to develop a fundraiser that both benefits the charity and the supporter in equal measure, whilst not costing the charity time or money. During the ever-changing and chaotic world that has developed over 2022 I believed I had finally found a new and untapped source of funding for charities that met all of the above dreams. After road testing the concept, speaking to a range of different small charities and with a bit of tweaking ‘Save and Fundraise’ was born.

Your team saves money and your charity raises money - win-win!

Save and Fundraise works on a very simple premise. Right now UK energy prices and other bills at home are higher than they have ever been. With most companies sitting at the top of the price cap there are now very few opportunities for homeowners to save and reduce the costs of their bills. However, there might only be a few opportunities to save, but these opportunities a bigger than ever, especially as there are now multi-service companies able to reduce a full range of home utilise bills. Through ‘Save and Fundraise’ we offer Free MOT’s of people home bills. People spend 20 minutes online with us looking at their current monthly utility bills and show them where significant savings could be made by switching providers (The average being a £350 saving).

Switching utility companies is nothing revolutionary, what is revolutionary is the fact that for every supporter of a charity who books a free bills MOT, sees the significant saving and chooses to change their providers to save money, their charity of choice will receive a £50 or £100 donation. The cherry on the top is that the energy is Green, whilst a new tree will be planted for each new customer.

My aim with ‘Save and Fundraise’ is for it to be a free fundraising tool that puts small charities needs as the top priority. A tool that helps charities support their staff, volunteers and supporters with the cost of living crisis whilst helping them raise significant unrestricted funds.
